Gol D. Roger, who we all know by the shortened name Gold Roger , was a legendary pirate. As Pirate Captain Roger, he held the title of Pirate King 🏴☠️ and possessed the legendary and much sought-after treasure One Piece. Roger was known as the man who accomplished what no one thought possible: he conquered Grand Ligne and amassed a vast fortune.
Afterwards, knowing that he would soon die of an incurable illness , Roger disbanded his crew before surrendering to be executed. While the world government 🌐 had displayed the firm intention of having Roger executed in public to discourage anyone from taking the path of piracy, the last words of the pirate king caused, as we will see, the opposite effect.
Gol D. Young Roger
It was in Loguetown that the legend of Gol D. Roger began. According to Monkey D. Garp, Roger grew up in difficult circumstances. He then developed the fear of losing those close to him. This is what he feared above all else. 😱 Some time later, during his youth, he met Silvers Rayleigh , who impressed him greatly. He then asked Silvers Rayleigh if he could join him in his quest for adventure. Roger subsequently became captain of the Roger pirate crew , with whom he contributed to enriching the nobility of piracy while building its reputation over several decades.
It didn't take long for him to make the sailors shudder just at the mention of his name. Indeed, Brook had already heard of a "rookie" with this name while he was still sailing the seas with the crew of the Rumbar .
Roger and his crew then sailed towards the New World . 🌍 By successfully sneaking through the territories of Totto Land, which belonged to Charlotte Linlin, Gol D. Roger managed to transcribe his Poneglyph . Later, thirty-nine years ago, the future pirate king and his crew managed to reach the island of Lodestar, the famous last island designated by the Log Pose.
However, Roger understood that the real final island 🏝️ must be beyond the designated point. He could then count on his Phoneglyph to find clues to the real location of the island in question. Unfortunately, he was never able to fully translate the text which contained the key.
A little over a year later, Roger entered into an alliance with his greatest rival at the time, Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp . By forming this short-lived alliance 💍 to fight the pirates of the Rock's crew, the two associated rivals had the opportunity to cross swords against famous sailors. It was at God Valley that the battle took place, pitting the pair against opponents like Edward Newgate, Charlotte Linlin, Kaido and most importantly, their captain, Rocks D. Xebec .
Following this battle, the alliance of Gol D. Roger and Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp was dissolved, with Captain Xebec simultaneously becoming in everyone's minds the greatest and most formidable of all of Roger's rivals . This initial clash has long been remembered as the God Valley Incident.
We then have to wait almost ten years to find another event probably marking the end of Gold Roger's youth. While reading a newspaper, 📰 he discovered that a samurai from the country of Wano had just joined the ranks of Whitebeard . He then decided to meet the latter at all costs! You know the rest…
Gold Roger's bounty
It is during chapter 957 that we learn more about the incredible bounty placed on the head of Gol D. Roger. During this chapter, Eijchiro Oda decided to focus his fans' attention on the Yonko, namely the Sea Emperors . 🤴 Everything is explained there about their origins, but especially about the value that each was able to achieve through the bounties offered to anyone who captured them. This is essential information since it allows us to understand how the Navy perceived their respective power and dangerousness.
For example, Commodore Brandnew, who had already revealed the amount of Monkey D. Luffy's bounty during the Loguetown arc episode, also revealed the frightening amounts 💲 allocated by the Navy to find the legendary Whitebeard and Gold Roger .
Let's start with Whitebeard. When he died full of heroism, his gaze fixed and fixed on his two legs, his price amounted to 5,046,000,000 Berrys! And that's not even the most impressive since the king of the pirates , Gol D. Roger, had a bounty estimated at 5,564,800,000 Berrys !
So that you can fully understand the immensity of such sums, we can compare them with those intended for other famous pirates. 🥇 The announced bonuses for Big Mom (Charlotte Linlin) and Kaido, who are both Yonko, are worth 4,388,000 Berrys for the first and 4,611,100,000 Berrys for the other.
As you can see, Gol D. Roger was the most wanted pirate on the seas and no other has ever reached such a high bounty . Luffy, who is currently worth 1.5 billion Berrys, still has a way to go before overtaking the first holder of the Straw Hat.👒 But anything remains possible...
Roger's weapons and abilities
To become a legendary pirate, Gold Roger didn't just rely on his charisma. He was formidable in combat 💪 and had developed skills that few others have ever mastered.
According to Rayleigh, he was able to “hear the voice of all things .” Thanks to this very special gift, he could hear and understand the Kings of the Seas, 👑 these immense and intelligent monsters. Roger also managed to decipher these mysterious blocks that are the Poneglyphs.
Of course, Gol D. Roger was always accompanied by his favorite weapons . While in one hand he held his sword, the other was equipped with a pistol. Traditional weapons but devastating once used by the pirate king. Renowned for his skills as a swordsman , ⚔️🤺 he demonstrated that he could defeat his opponents with a sword just like Kozuki Oden.
He also resisted Whitebeard's Murakumogiri , a blade being recognized as one of the twelve best in the One Piece universe . The contact between the blades of the two protagonists caused a shock wave that shook the entire island on which they were located!
To make it all better, Gold Roger also had more than one trick up his sleeve. Beyond weapons, his fighting techniques were just as powerful. His Kamusari , which literally means "The Disappearance of God", 👼 allowed him to create super-powerful shock waves with his sword to strike his opponents.
It was against Kozuki Oden that we were able to see this technique in action for the first time, the blow sent to the latter's torso throwing him an unexpected distance.
Additionally, Roger had mastered at least two different types of Haki . The first is Weaponry Haki , which he used to an impressive level, as we saw when he attacked Whitebeard by imbuing his sword with this same Haki. The second, even more violent, is the Haki of Kings . It was also against Whitebeard that Gol D. Roger used it, creating an enormous outburst. 💣
Who is Roger's son?
Portgas D. Ace was the son of Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. As Gol D. Roger did not want Ace to be born a criminal due to his family ties, he asked Garp to take care of Ace in secret. However, Ace did not experience it the same way and interpreted his father's choice as abandonment. That's why he hated his father .
Still, although he felt hatred for his father, Ace seemed to have at least some respect for him, as he severely beat anyone who insulted Roger. However, this may be due to the fact that these offenders would often start slandering "Gol D. Roger's son", 👨👦 thus referring to Ace himself without really knowing it.
Yet it was quite visible. Dadan had noticed that Ace had inherited much of Roger's personality after asking him why he wasn't running away from Bluejam. Shanks also noted at Ace's burial site that he was just like his father, never running away , even in critical situations. 😵
The most important character trait that Ace had inherited from Roger was his ruthlessness ☠️ towards anyone who threatened or insulted those close to him. It was precisely by wanting to protect Monkey D. Luffy during the Marineford Arc that he was killed by Admiral Akainu.
The Oro Jackson, Roger's boat
Any self-respecting captain runs a ship worthy of his reputation. The Oro Jackson is one of those boats that command admiration.
It was made for Gol D. Roger and his crew by Tom at Water Seven. This fabrication caused serious problems for Tom, with the World Government considering this to be a serious crime. The punishment was fatal: Tom was sentenced to death . ⚰️
The Oro Jackson had a more glorious destiny. It is the only ship to have made it to the end of the Grand Line . Even today, it is nicknamed “The Conqueror of the Oceans” or “ The Ship of the Pirate King ”. ⚓👑 It must be said that it was made from extremely rare wood, which can only be found in black markets. This is the same wood that was used to build Franky's Thousand Sunny, who dreams of one day seeing his baby surpass the famous Oro Jackson.
But for that, you have to get up early. With its seven sails, its two sirens and its enormous cannon 💥 which acts as a bow, the Oro Jackson had enough to see the competition coming.
Its sails, recognizable by their black and crimson red vertical stripes, had every crew already trembling with fear 😱 just seeing it arrive, the Jolly Roger symbol on the front sail being able to be seen from afar.
When Roger's team disbanded following his execution, the Oro Jackson disappeared, no one ever knowing what happened to it.
Gol D. Roger's Crew
Roger's crew was made up of established and experienced pirates. Together, they sailed on the Road of All Perils , ☢️ not hesitating to take dangerous detours, like at Skypiéa. Everything they accomplished is considered part of the legend, the charisma of their captain also having something to do with it.
Yet, surprisingly, only Gol D. Roger enjoys personal fame, the others having gradually fallen back into anonymity. Only certain members, like Shanks, were able to reinvent themselves to continue playing their card on Grand Line . 🌊
However, it was by all being united that they managed to conquer the Grand Line. Each member that we have been able to see at work in the different chapters is to be considered among the most powerful pirates in history . 💪 Even Rayleigh, despite his great age, remained a sacred sea monster.
Shanks also already had his reputation when he worked within the pirate lord's crew. 🤴 It is not for nothing that he is now recognized as one of the four most powerful pirates of the moment, even being nicknamed the Emperor ...
And others are also worth mentioning, like Crocus! Although we never saw him use Haki , he still managed to kill a squid in one hit with his giant harpoon. 🗡️ This pirate still resisted bazooka explosions!
Buggy for his part defeated Luffy at the start of his journey, so much so that after the dissolution of the crew, he even reached the status of Corsair, his reputation no longer needing to be established. 🤩 And Gol D. Roger , master among masters, will remain whatever happens, one of the strongest pirates that Grand Line has ever carried on its waves.
The execution of Gol D. Roger
The pirate king had known he had an incurable illness for years. This did not stop him from reaping ever more wealth, power and fame 🏅 until his final days. No one could have imagined how far he would go.
His life as a pirate made him meet historic captains and corsairs and his eternal confrontations with the legendary Vice-Admiral of the Navy Garp nevertheless allowed him to realize one thing: Roger was mortal , 🩸like the others , and his life would end up slipping away from him.
For fear of not dying at the height of his glory, he undertook to gradually disband his crew , while keeping it secret. 🤫 He explained to Rayleigh that by doing this, he would never die. He also informed Whitebeard, warning him that he would soon die. However, he did not tell him if it was the illness that would kill him or if he had already planned his execution .
Because it was of his own free will that he handed himself over to the Navy . Knowing that he was going to be executed ☠️ as an example, he was preparing to play one last trick on those who had been trying for so many years to catch him.
In prison, he made sure that his son did not suffer from his reputation, ensuring that a child at such a young age did not have to be considered a criminal just by his blood ties . He asked Vice Admiral Garp himself to make sure.
Convinced that they would succeed in frightening all the other pirates by killing Gold Roger , the Marines hastened his execution, in Loguetown, where it all began for him. But at the last moment, just before the executioner's blade fell on him, 🔪 the pirate king cried out loud and clear “My treasure? 💎 I'll leave it to you if you want it! Find it ! I left it somewhere in this world! »
Thus died the lord of the pirates , one of the greatest kings of the seas, causing with his fall a new boom: that of the golden age of pirates.
