Better known by the nickname Akainu, Admiral 🎖️ Sakazuki is the man who currently holds the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Navy. He is therefore the highest ranking and the one who leads the entirety of all Marine forces in the One Piece universe. He was first revealed in the series as the Vice Admiral who oversaw the Buster Call during the Ohara Incident.
Sakazuki represents one of the main antagonists of the series and he is one of the worst Admirals (if not the worst) that the Navy has known to date due to his extremism for Justice ⚖️ Absolute and his horrible actions for the application of the latter. Sakazuki Appearance
After the two-year hiatus, Sakazuki opted for a jacket with flower motifs worn under his coat. He now has a beard and has started smoking cigars. 🚬 The black tattoo (in the anime, it is pale blue) that he got on the left side of his stomach corresponds to several flowers whose edges are in the shape of flames. Akainu Personality
Chief Admiral Sakazuki firmly believes in the philosophical principle called Absolute Justice that governs the Navy. Akainu vs Aokiji
After Sengoku's removal from the post of Admiral Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Akainu was designated as his successor. However, knowing his colleague's methods and extremism regarding Justice, Admiral Aokiji decided to oppose his appointment, especially since he was supported by Sengoku to replace him. So, in order to determine who would ultimately take the position, the two Admirals faced off on an island in the New World, Punk Hazard . Previously, this island housed a military site belonging to the World Government. Unfortunately, due to the toxic disaster ☢️ caused by scientist Caesar Clown, the island became a huge abandoned wasteland and the base was closed. It was a year later, after the toxic gases had dissipated, that the duel between Akainu and Aokiji took place and lasted 10 days.
Due to the powers of their respective Devil Fruits, the island was permanently transformed into a landscape of desolation. Indeed, on the one hand, the East of Punk Hazard was covered in lava and fire 🔥 because of Sakazuki's Magu Magu no Mi. Not only were the buildings either melted or disfigured, but the sea around them also turned into a sea of fire, making it impossible to dock ships on this part of the island. At the end of the 10-day fight, with the Admirals both suffering serious injuries, Akainu emerged victorious, but he did not kill his opponent since Aokiji was his comrade.
Akainu vs Whitebeard
During the Battle of Marine Ford, when he was still an Admiral, Akainu faced Edward Newgate aka Whitebeard Yonkô in an epic battle. At one point at the beginning of this war, Sakazuki entered the scene to destroy with his arm 💪🏼 which had become magma the gigantic block of ice thrown by Joz towards the giants who were in front of the scaffold. His blow then transformed into a flood of volcanic stones, one of which was heading directly towards Whitebeard. The latter used his Bisento, the Murakumogiri being one of the 12 Saijo Ô Wazamono which are Meito of unrivaled quality , to stop the burning stone and blew on the flames to extinguish them.
The Strongest Man in the World then told Admiral Akainu to light the candles on a birthday cake instead of bragging about his magma. While laughing, Sakazuki replied by asking him if he didn't want to have a bright funeral. Let us first note that before these two characters clash directly, Whitebeard has already been seriously injured by Squard aka The Maelstrom Spider who stabbed him in the chest after having been deceived and manipulated by Akainu.
Subsequently, while the fighting rages everywhere on the square, Akainu faces Whitebeard for the first time. As the latter was about to attack, Sakazuki blocked his Murakumogiri with his foot. He tells Whitebeard that if he doesn't stop launching seismic attacks like this, the island will be destroyed, to which the Emperor 🤴🏼 laughingly retorts that it's up to him to try to protect her. They then continued to fight until the World's Strongest Man was distracted by Vice Admiral Garp the Hero. Akainu took the opportunity to launch a magma attack but Whitebeard threw it back at him with ease, forcing him to parry his own attack. Whitebeard then hit him with his Bisento ⛏️ impregnated with Haki which threw Akainu into the air. Unfortunately, Whitebeard felt ill, dropped to his knees and spat up blood. The Admiral took advantage of this moment of weakness to hit him with a devastating molten magma punch in the stomach, which left a large hole.
With Whitebeard injured, Commander-in-Chief Admiral Sengoku ordered his troops to attack and kill him. The Emperor thus received several saber blows 🤺 in the chest as well as a Bazooka attack on the head but Whitebeard regained his senses and easily swept aside the Marines who attacked him. After Ace was rescued by Luffy but killed by Akainu while protecting his brother, Edward Newgate flew into a rage and rushed behind the Admiral to deliver a destructive punch, crushing the Admiral to the ground.
Even injured, Akainu still managed to avoid two more attacks from Whitebeard by rolling aside. He then began to retaliate by throwing several lava punches at the Yonkô , one of which cut his mustache in the anime. The two continued to fight until Whitebeard knocked him to the ground with a punch. 👊🏼 As Whitebeard is about to punch him again, Akainu manages to surprise him by throwing flames in his face. The Admiral then hit him in the stomach again with his lava punch and made a second gaping hole. Hit hard, Whitebeard dropped to one knee with his stomach on fire.
At that moment, Akainu bids farewell to Whitebeard, believing that he has defeated him and killed him. But suddenly, still on one knee, the Emperor grabbed Akainu by the collar of his shirt and stood up, lifting the Admiral from the ground at the same time. He then threw him into the air and hit him hard with a seismic punch to his ribs once he came back down. This incredible blow caused terrible destruction at the same time: the ground cracked everywhere and buildings collapsed, including part of the Naval Headquarters . The titanic duel of the two characters ended at that moment while Akainu's body slipped and disappeared in the twists and turns of one of the nearby cracks, not without having further insulted Whitebeard as a scavenger. Akainu's Abilities
As the current Admiral Commander-in-Chief, Sakazuki is in command of the entire military force that is the Navy. The origins
Along with Borsalino, Sakazuki enlisted in the Navy 32 years ago before the One Piece story began. Before being promoted, he was revealed as Vice Admiral, one of five vice admirals in charge of the Buster Call targeting Ohara Island. During this event known as the Ohara Incident, he was the one who destroyed a ship carrying civilians and soldiers for fear that a single researcher from the island had managed to infiltrate on board. His decision had shocked not only his friend and colleague Kuzan, but also Spandine, the leader of CP9 or Cypher Pol. 9 in charge of the investigation on Ohara and at the origin of the triggering of the Buster Call on this island.
The War at the Summit
Sakazuki is one of the Three Admirals in charge of commanding the Marine soldiers during the confrontation with the Whitebeard Pirates during the Battle of Marine Ford. Initially, he is seen sitting with the other Admirals in front of the execution platform. It is only when Joz aka Diamond Joz projects a huge iceberg that Akainu joins the fight. This is when he reveals his Devil Fruit's abilities 😈 by using a lava punch to destroy the iceberg. At the same time, small fiery stones were thrown onto the square, which caused one of Whitebeard's boats to be demolished. Afterwards, Akainu was seen killing a Marine who was fleeing the battlefield for fear of dying and never seeing his family. When Akainu wanted to deliver a magma punch to Luffy who was on the ground, Ace intervened to protect his brother and took the attack head-on through his torso right through. This is how Portgas D. Ace aka Ace of the Silver Fists gave up the ghost .
Ace's death unleashed the anger of Whitebeard, who struck Akainu with a paralyzing attack from behind. Getting up, he retaliated by practically burning half of Whitebeard's face (in the anime, Akainu hit Whitebeard with a magma punch which made a hole in his body). Eventually, he was defeated by Emperor Whitebeard who knocked him out with a seismic punch. He fell unconscious, but alive, into a fissure on the island. He then made his way underground and began to hunt down Luffy to finish him off. He didn't care much about Blackbeard's announcement that his era was beginning, but preferred to continue chasing his target. 🎯 At one point, he managed to critically injure Luffy and Jinbei but several characters intervened to protect the Straw Hat Pirate: Ivankov, Inazuma, Crocodile, Marco, Vista, Izo as well as Curiel. He was later very upset that Sengoku had agreed to end the War at the request of Red Shanks, one of the Four Emperors .
Rise in rank
After the Battle of Marine Ford, Commander-in-Chief Admiral Sengoku left the Navy. In chapter 700 of the manga, Sakazuki reappears during a meeting of ranking officers in this new Navy HQ. The subjects discussed during this meeting were the so-called renunciation of Doflamingo to the status of Grand Corsair, the choice of a new Corsair Captain in the person of Buggy the Clown 🤡 as well as the alliance established between Monkey D.
