Edward Newgate: Yonko Whitebeard

In One Piece, Edward Newgate, more generally known as Whitebeard, was one of the greatest pirates known 🏴‍☠️.

He was the captain of his crew, one of the most feared fleets in the world of One Piece. Known as one of the 4 Yonkos, Edward Newgate conquered most of the oceans during his life and therefore earned the nickname given to him: "the strongest man in the world" 🏆 .

It is a shame that the exposure of this character to the forefront lasted only a short time, this Yonko left without us being able to fully retrace his story in a clear and precise manner. Here are ten facts you didn't know about Edward Newgate aka "Whitebeard" .

10. Whitebeard and the Rocks Crew

First Whitebeard Pirates

Newgate was not always the captain of Whitebeard's crew and this is a fact that Oda was keen to point out to us more than once. Before his death, we got to see a flashback of him on his old crew where he expressed his intention to have a big family 👨‍👨‍👦‍👦.

Later in the manga, it was revealed that he sailed on the same boat as Rocks D. Xebec , the man who wanted to be king of the world, as a member of the Rocks. Years later, beyond the God Valley incident he made the decision to form his own crew.

9. His beginnings in piracy

The beginnings of Edward Newgate

Whitebeard makes his first appearance in chapter 234 of the One Piece manga and episode 151 of the anime. We saw Whitebeard meet Rockstar during the episode, which prompted Shanks to also go to meet him 👋.

Interestingly, Whitebeard's first appearance was much earlier. But we had only seen the silhouette , which does not count as a real presentation.

8. His other epithet

The King of the Seas

Whitebeard had the reputation of being "the strongest man in the world", just that! 👊. No one questioned this title attributed to him, even emblematic characters of One Piece such as Shank's and even Garp who used to call him "the king of the seas" .

But as if that wasn't enough, Edward Newgate wasn't just called by that name. He was also considered "One Piece's closest man" and as a result a large number of characters called him that. But it's a strange paradox because, in fact, Whitebeard had no use for One Piece; in his eyes, the only existing treasure was the family he had built.

7. Whitebeard's birthday

The birth of Whitebeard As all the subtleties of the tumultuous life of this great pirate have not been revealed, this is why readers are asking questions about the origins of Whitebeard. According to Oda's story, Whitebeard was born on April 6, 1450 🎂.

His place of origin is listed as Sphinx Island , and this was confirmed later in the story when Nekomamushi 🐱 left to meet Marco the Phoenix. We therefore see that Edward Newgate is in fact two or even three years younger than his greatest rival, Gol D. Roger.

6. His early childhood

Whitebeard's childhood
Whitebeard was an orphan and spent most of his life in very modest surroundings. This is partly due to the fact that the Sphinx Island did not have the means to enable an alliance with the world government, because the island did not have the financial resources to fulfill the celestial offering 💸. This is why Whitebeard decided to go in search of wealth, glory and power .

He became one of the greatest pirates of all time 🗺. According to Marco, a large part of Whitebeard's heritage always went to Sphinx Island, because the people there lived in poverty.

5. His love for orphans

Whitebeard and the orphans
The fact that Whitebeard became an orphan happened very early in his life 🧒. We were not aware of the relationship he had with his parents. It is mainly for this main reason that Newgate formed his crew of orphans, thereby creating a unique and extraordinary family .

Scan 965 of One Piece bears witness to this, we learn that the only motivation for Whitebeard to recruit Teach lay in the fact that he was also an orphan and therefore had this crew as his only refuge . This is not a unique case, in the eyes of Yonko, it was a criterion of choice🦜.

4. His power

The power of Whitebeard

Whitebeard is often considered the second greatest pirate after Gol D. Roger because the latter found the One Piece. While that was certainly the case, Whitebeard was Roger's equal in every way imaginable⚔. He simply was n't interested in discovering One Piece , and for him, his only treasure was his family.

Just as Roger found his treasure, Whitebeard found his too. In terms of power, Whitebeard was known as the only man to ever match Gol D. Roger in One Piece. In fact, even during the era of Gol D. Roger, Newgate already had the epithet "The Strongest Man in the World" 🧭 .

3. The Newgate Principles

Edward Newgate's Rules
Pirates have a very strong principle regarding freedom 👼. But, that didn't mean it had no value. Whitebeard had two very specific rules. The 1st was established on his ship and it stipulates a formal ban on attacking another pirate in the crew ( Teach has also deviated from this rule 🌌 ).

The second rule is as follows: Whitebeard's principle was never to appropriate someone else's loot 💰, he had the notion of what treasure could represent in the eyes of a person. This is why he decided not to encroach on businesses that were dear to other pirates (even though he had ample means).

2. His mastery of Haki

Whitebeard's Haki
Being the strongest man in One Piece, it is no surprise that Whitebeard was an extremely powerful Haki user. It was confirmed by Eiichiro Oda that Whitebeard had high proficiency in all three types of Haki . In Scan 966, he displayed his mastery of Armament Haki and Kings Haki while battling Gol D. Roger on the Grand Line .

This powerful Haki, combined with the abilities of his Gura Gura no Mi 🍈 made him one of the most fearsome pirates in the oceans, especially if his family was injured .

1. Whitebeard's bounty

The Bounty of Yonko Whitebeard
Whitebeard's bounty remained unknown for the majority of the work, but recently, scan 957 has arrived. After the current Yonko's bounties were revealed, Oda also revealed Whitebeard 's bounty to the readers 🗡.

We discover the astronomical bounty of Yonko Edward Newgate which touches the mark of 5,046,000,000 berries , an amount which is only equaled by that of Roger. The latter being higher because the latter found the famous Raftel treasure: the One Piece 👑 ( 5,564,800,000 Berrries) and knew the truth about the world of One Piece, Newgate had no interest in this coveted treasure.
