Are you a reader who wants to start with the greatest manga? The works chosen below can help you get your reading off to a good start. So I chose these titles in particular because they are already finished and offer you the opportunity to connect with other readers who have been reading forever! 📖

Dragon Ball Z by Akira Toriyama

Dragon Ball

Toriyama's manga, currently one of the most popular manga in the world, is inspired by the classic Chinese novel, " Journey to the West." The story features Son Goku , an alien educated in the same way as a human, who does martial arts. He is constantly looking for dragon balls 🐉 allowing him to appear a dragon who can grant him a wish of his choice.

INU-YASHA by RUMIKO TAKAHASHI

Inuyasha

Rumiko Takahashi is surely among the most important female manga artists still working. Many stories are written in his books such as the hilarious martial arts manga Ranma ½ . Inu-yasha focuses on Kagome , a Japanese student 🇯🇵 who stumbles into a well at her family's shrine and finds herself transported to the Sengoku era. There, she meets the half-dog demon, Inuyasha, and escapades ensue.

What can we say about Naruto? A whole generation of manga fans cut their teeth in this famous adventure of an orphan boy, dreaming of becoming the best ninja in his village. If you love high-level battles and pretty impressive ninja powers ⚔️, this manga is for you! It's also one of the most accessible stories for people wanting to start reading manga.

Konoha Headband

Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa

Fullmetal Alchemist

When you ask someone who loves reading manga, which book(s) they should put in their top 10, Fullmetal Alchemist is very often in there and that is not insignificant. The premise is, however, very ordinary: two brothers seek out the wizarding school to restore their bodies but when they try to revive their mother, things go wrong. But there is actually much more to it than that. Not only does it explore the relationship between brothers a little more after a disaster, but it also features some of the most awesome female characters you'll ever see in a manga. As well as an intriguing plot that consists of conspiracy, redemption and sacrifice. And I think that despite some preferences for other works, this manga is among one of the best where the reader can really immerse themselves in it and forget everything that is around it.

Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata

Death Note

Please forget the horrible, whitewashed Netflix adaptation and try reading the original manga instead. It's based on a brilliant high school student who obtains a notebook giving him the power to kill someone he knows. As Tohru Honda is a girl with a big heart, she keeps this particular secret for herself for the great happiness of the family and makes it her mission to break the curse that weighs on the family.

Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi

Sailor Moon

Surely one of the best works about girls with magical powers, Sailor Moon is awarded the honor of having inaugurated this genre as we are used to seeing it currently. The protagonist, Usagi Tsukino , learns that she happens to be Sailor Moon, an evil fighter, whose destiny will be to defend planet Earth 🌏. Along the way, she gathers other Sailor Scouts - warriors destined to be representatives of the other planets in the galaxy so that they can fight together and eradicate evil from the earth.

B) Best manga still being published

Imagine being asked to delve into a manga still being published with a plot that gives you something to think about and discuss... Then these titles are for you! 😜

My Hero Academia by KOHEI HORIKOSHI

My Hero Academia

The manga, My Hero Academia , is a manga that focuses on superheroes. Izuku Midoriya is a simple human who is born into a world where everyone around him is born with superpowers. He therefore sees all his chances of becoming a superhero shrinking. However, thanks to an unexpected event, he acquires a set of superpowers of his own. And it could well be that his dream is not so out of reach in the end...✨

Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama

Attack on Titan

Isayama took the manga world by storm with his post-apocalyptic vision 🌋 of a weak human race besieged by man-eating giants. The plot has evolved from this initial premise; it's now filled with conspiracies, a fairly obscure exploration of oppression, and even darker parallels to real history. Nevertheless, these first volumes remain the best mangas that represent survival and action-packed adventures well.

Eren's key necklace

The Seven Deadly Sins by Nakaba Suzuki

Nanatsu no Taizai

In a world where injustice reigns, the Holy Knights of Britannia protect their homeland with their unmatched magic and strength. Their most sought-after targets are the " Seven Deadly Sins ": a group of criminals 🦹🏼‍♂️ once considered the most powerful knights of Britannia. Ten years later, the Holy Knights ironically stage a coup and capture the Lion King, installing themselves as the new rulers of the kingdom. One Piece by EIICHIRO ODA

One Piece

One Piece happens to be one of the most popular and notable manga of the current generation. And there is no doubt about it since it holds records and is among the top best-selling books in Japan since 1997. To summarize its story, the story revolves around a little boy wanting to accomplish a big goal: to become the pirate King.

You can find plenty of impressive abilities, visual and hilarious puns in this manga that proves that it is important to remember to follow your goals in life and never let your dreams slip away. 🏃🏻‍♂️

C) Some popular manga!

Did you cut your teeth reading manga that a simple manga fan might know? Do you now want to delve into manga that were “pioneering” manga and that were a source of inspiration for manga creators? Then this list is surely what you need to help you find your happiness! 🤘🏽

Astro, The Little Robot BY OSAMU TEZUKA

Astroboy

Known as the "pioneer manga" of the manga genre, Tezuka's List influenced manga in general and was the origin of many of the conventions we know today. You can't really go wrong with any of the Tezuka titles, but I chose to include Astro, the Little Robot , which presents the familiar story of a man of science who decided to build a robot to die of her child. 🤖

Devilman by GO NAGAI

Devilman

Originally appearing in the early 1970s, Devilman has spawned countless spin-offs and anime adaptations, the most recent of which took Netflix by storm in early 2018. The story centers around a boy obtaining demonic powers 👹 but who makes beneficial use of them: he wants to help humans. But unfortunately, it will become complicated for two reasons: a special friendship and whether humanity deserves to be protected.

Akira by KATSUHIRO OTOMO

Akira

Most fans are familiar with this now fundamental anime. However, as in many film adaptations, the film condenses several thousand pages and this erases many nuances. This manga details the conflict between biker gang leader Kaneda and his friend who has unstable telekinesis, Tetsuo . It also immerses us in a corrupt world where politics and power are its strong point.

Cardcaptor Sakura by CLAMP

Sakura

CLAMP has created many beloved manga series, although many remain incomplete. As a manga for young girls, Cardcaptor Sakura is probably one of the most affordable manga among CLAMP's works. The story follows a girl named Sakura who unleashes a series of cards with magical powers 🃏. But following this, Sakura sees herself obliged to find them to put them in their place. If Sailor Moon was the pioneer among mangas to talk about a story about girls with magical powers, Cardcaptor Sakura is not far behind with a design of its own.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure by HIROHIKO ARAKI

Jojos

Formerly considered an obscure manga according to French-speaking manga fans, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is receiving unprecedented recognition in view of its transformation into an anime broadcast by Crunchyroll. This fairly long manga explores the particular destiny of the Joestar family . It is divided into distinct parts that focus on a different family member and a particular time and place. To give you a clear idea: from the start, you are plunged directly into the character of Jonathan Joestar in the era of Victorian England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, while the fourth part focuses on Josuke Higashikata finding himself in a Japanese city.

This manga is one of the most influential in manga history, and when you've read enough of it, you'll see its references in countless manga and anime.

Parasite by Hitoshi Iwaaki

Parasite

In this story, the "parasites" are creatures 🦠 whose number and origin are unknown. They invade and take control of the human mind in order to survive. Shinichi Izumi is a 16-year-old high school student who lives with his parents in a quiet neighborhood. One night, a parasite invades Shinichi's body in an attempt to take control of it. However, he fails to complete the takeover process and ends up inhabiting only his right arm.

Thus, Shinichi and the Parasite - who calls himself Migi - retain their individual minds. Shinichi has no choice but to agree to cooperate with the "parasite", and he must now hold on to his morals as he and Migi face off against other bloodthirsty parasites.

Hunter x Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi

Hunter x Hunter

In Hunter x Hunter , the hunters are unusual men. Indeed, they are all full of talents and have multiple abilities ranging from the most common to the most extraordinary. They have access to money and information that no one would have the right to access. However, being a hunter is a complicated privilege to obtain, in fact, it can only be obtained by passing a very difficult exam with an almost zero success rate.

Gon Freecss , a 12-year-old boy hoping to find his missing father, embarks on a quest to pass the hunter exam. Along the way, he meets three companions who aim to pass the dangerous exam: the vengeful Kurapika , the aspiring doctor Leorio , and a child similar to Gon, Killua Zoldyck .

From here I have categorized the manga by title and genre. Hope this helps you find what you're looking for a little more! 😁

Akame Ga kills Takahiro

Akame Ga Kill

Akame Ga Kill takes place in a world where no one is safe from death, even with the help of their legendary Imperial weapons. It's almost like the Game of Thrones of the anime world; there are unexpected deaths, love, betrayal, and a deep, rich mythos that leaves you wanting to know more about the world. The characters in Akame Ga Kill are neither good nor bad. They have their own convictions, which give real weight to the choices they make.

D) The best works of Romance

High School Debut of KAZUNE KAWAHARA

Highschool debut

A middle school softball superstar, Haruna decides to pursue another goal when she enters high school: finding a boyfriend. However, there is another small problem: Haruna has never paid attention to love, clothing style or beauty, which doesn't particularly help her know how to go about finding a boyfriend. So in order not to lose sight of her objective, she seeks help from the well-known boy. This one seems to accept but he asks one thing of Haruna: not to fall in love with him 💔.

This story may seem cliché at the edges, but there is no doubt that anyone could fall in love with Haruna's sincerity and frankness.

Paradise Kiss by AI YAZAWA

Paradise Kiss

And even though it's irritating, the two put aside their differences to try to conquer their much-desired respective crushes 💞. But things don't go as planned...

My Story of KAZUNE KAWAHARA AND ARUKO

The proof is that Takeo Goda matches this description in every way but no girl falls in love with him. Everyone who could potentially interest him ends up falling completely crazy for his best friend, Makoto . One day, all this will change when Takeo meets Rinko , a young girl who will take an interest in him.

With delicious touches of love, charm and seriousness, My Story is not so different from High School Debut.

Skip Beat! by YOSHIKI NAKAMURA

Skip Beat

Kyoko Mogami , a hardworking and serious young woman, wants to please her best friend by following him to Tokyo so that he can become a show business star. But her dream of one day marrying him is shattered when she discovers he was just using her all along. Kyoko then became furious and decided to become more famous than him 🕺🏼. The intrigue around Kyoko will therefore unfold in two points: a discovery of her talents by chance, during a mission, and the hidden side of a boy whom she believed to be her best childhood friend and in on whom she had placed her good will and her love.

E) The sports section of this top manga!

Kuroko's Basket by TADATOSHI FUJIMAKI

Kuroko Basketball

The manga that kicked off the resurgence of the sports genre is none other than Kuroko's Basket 🏀, which tells the story of a group of middle school basketball players. They had an argument in the past and now have to face each other at school.

And it is true that the precision of basketball is not really highlighted in this manga, however you will be able to find what you are looking for there if you like to be touched by drama.

Haikyuu!! by HARUICHI FURUDATE

Haikyu

Shoyo Hinata loves volleyball and aspires to become one of the best players in the region. And when he becomes a high school student, he again comes across Tobio Kageyama, a volleyball player 🏐, whom he had met during a volleyball match in middle school. But in high school, these former rivals must now become a peerless team to represent their prestigious school.

Ace Of Diamond by YUJI TERAJIMA

Ace of Diamond

Although baseball is an American sport, the Japanese are not indifferent to this sport from elsewhere. And that's why the creator of this manga, Yuji Terajima, depicts baseball through the strong points and weak points of this sport. The story focuses on Eijun Sawamura , a young baseball player, preferably left-handed, who is offered a place in a high school where the baseball team is very powerful ⚾️.

Chihayafuru by YUKI SEUTSUGU

What's beautiful about sports-related manga is that it's not just about "traditional" sports. A lot of them involve strategy too. Chihayafuru offers us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a game involving Japanese cards, karuta, through its heroine, Chihaya , who demonstrates a natural 😌 and unexpected aptitude for this game.

Real by TAKEHIKO INOUE

Real

Takehiko Inoue is probably best known for another of his basketball manga, Slam Dunk . But REAL is a mature take on the sport, told through the lens of wheelchair basketball 👨🏼‍🦽. It beautifully addresses the story of people marginalized by society in different ways and fluidly addresses the problems that a person with a physical disability may have. It also addresses psychological issues which can be just as important.

Hajime no Ippo by George Morikawa

Hajime No Hippo

Makunouchi Ippo has been bullied all his life. One day, in the midst of a new attack, Ippo finds himself saved by Takamura Mamoru , a boxer. But Ippo still loses consciousness due to the blows and Takamura then takes him to a boxing gym 🥊.

When he wakes up, Ippo is surprised and fascinated by the new environment surrounding him. To try to make him aware of the situation, Takamura then puts a photo of one of the people bullying him on a punching bag so that he can punch it and imagine himself hitting the person. As soon as Ippo starts hitting, he quickly realizes that he has awakened something by forcing him to hit harder. He will then express his desire to learn how to box to Takumara. But he is perplexed and thinks it will be difficult for Ippo. He then gives him a complicated task and gives him a week, no more, to accomplish it. Thus begins Ippo's journey to the top of the boxing world.

F) Historical mangas

Bride Stories by KAORU MORI

A bridle Story

The story takes place somewhere in a Central Asian country towards the end of the 19th century where Amir , 20 years old, is sent by her tribe to marry a man much younger than her. And although through this manga we discover a little more about her and her husband, we know more about other young women and men who are forced to marry 💍.

Blade Of The Immortal by HIROAKI SAMURA

Blade of the Immortal

Despite the importance of historical samurai manga like Lone Wolf and Cub and Lady Snowblood , this type of manga fell out of fashion in the manga community for almost two decades. But the situation changed during the 1990s thanks to samurai manga books. Blade of the Immortal takes up the genre by mixing visuals, traditions, samurai culture with modern speech patterns. The result is a magnificent manga, with violence, centered on the quest of a girl wanting to avenge her parents who died in a hurry ☠️, killed by a dangerous man.

Vagabond by TAKEHITO INOUE

Vagabond

Although the author of Vagabond is famous for his sports-related manga, Inoue wanted to make this one a kind of adventure through the world of samurai. It is based on the fictional life of Miyamoto Musashi , the famous author of " The Books of the Five Rings " 📚. The story begins in 1600 where a horrible massacre took place during the Battle of Sekigahara. Among the warriors is Musashi , the son of a powerful samurai, who is not ready to die.

The Men's Pavilion of FUMI YOSHINAGA

Ooku

In a story set in feudal Japan, a strange pandemic kills most of the men. This leads to a society led by women where they take on all responsibilities including the role of the shogun and where their harem - the Ooku - consists of handsome men 🤵🏼. Assuming that you know something about Japanese history, especially that concerning the Tokugawa shogun, this should be able to fascinate you just as much.

G) Thrillers and horror mangas

Monster by NAOKI URASAWA

Monster

Naoki Urasawa has created many mangas that appear on quite a few lists indicating the best mangas. It's only natural that I chose Monster because it challenges the idea that all manga involves superpowers, supernatural beings or the apocalypse. Additionally, the story follows a brilliant neurosurgeon 🧠 who is offered the opportunity to make a choice between two individuals who need to be saved. He makes the choice to save a child who will, in the future, be a major serial killer.

KOHSKE gangsta

Gangsta

This urban crime drama, which has speculative elements, follows a pair of jack-of-all-trades, from drug dealing to score-settling. The city in which they work, however, is the scene of discord among the gangs as well as among the people and veterans from old wars. And as one might suspect, this conflict does not take long to degenerate and have tragic and explosive consequences 💥.

I am A Hero by KENGO HANAZAWA

I am a hero

You can't review Japanese manga without having seen at least one apocalyptic zombie version 🧟‍♂️. Here, a Mangaka assistant (as they are called in the industry) leads an ordinary life by putting himself as a fictional character, very present and a real moral support in his story. But when a strange disease transforming people into zombies spreads on the horizon, he sees his mediocre life take another turn. The story is then based on the life of Kirie Goshima who sees his hometown suddenly struck down by a nasty curse containing spirals 🌀. Demon Slayer

Based on the manga of the same name by Koyoharu Gotōge which has been published in the weekly Shōnen Jump since 2016, the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime captivated viewers when it debuted in April 2019. Following the Adventures of Tanjiro Kamado in a world full of demons, Kimetsu no Yaiba and its universe, which is inspired by Japanese culture during the Taishō era, has a lot to offer. Thanks in large part to the series' success, a film is planned for release later this year that will cover the next installment in the series, titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train.

When he finally returns home the next day, he is greeted by a horrifying sight: his entire family has been massacred. Tanjiro will then do whatever it takes to protect humanity.

Yu Yu Hakusho by YOSHIHIRO TOGASHI

Yu Yu Hakusho

And if you want to know a pretty funny piece of gossip: the creator of this manga, Togashi is the husband of Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon! Who wouldn't find that funny and cute? 🥺

Mushishi by YUKI URUSHIBARA
