Dojutsu: hereditary pupils

Naruto tells the story of a fascinating ninja world where ninjas can use various awesome techniques called Ninjutsu. 📜 These Ninjutsu techniques are so incredible that they are more like magic than Jutsu as one would expect. And among this world of ninja, there is a particular type of Ninjutsu that is extremely powerful: Dojutsu, or eye techniques . 👁️ Of course, Naruto fans are already familiar with these special eye powers, but it's always interesting to take a look again!

Let's talk about Dojutsu:

Dojutsu (瞳術) literally means Eye Techniques, referring to the techniques and abilities that a particular eye possesses . 👁️‍🗨️ Dojutsu are unique abilities belonging to several clans and only their descendants benefit from them, with some exceptions! The Dojutsu user typically gains enormous power and advantage beyond that of a typical ninja. Mainly, because the user can use various very powerful unique abilities.

There are many Dojutsu in the Naruto universe, but here we will only cover the most well-known Eye Dojutsu 👀 (三大瞳術): Byakugan, Sharingan and Rinnegan .

Byakugan

Byakugan (白眼), or White Eye, is one of the three great dojutsu and naturally possesses formidable power, although it is not as destructive as the other eyes. This eye is also called the " all-seeing white eye " because it allows the user to have almost 360-degree vision. So far, only the Hyuga and Otsutsuki clans possess this Dojutsu, inherited directly from Kaguya Otsutsuki herself.

The eye is unique since it always appears as a white, featureless eye. Only when activated does the pupil appear, 👁️ as well as the protruding veins near the eyes.

The Byakugan user gains two abilities: 360-degree vision as well as the ability to observe the flow of ninja chakras . 💫 Their vision abilities give members of the Hyuga clan an advantage during battle because they are able to see everything around them in 360°. Combined with their special Juken techniques, they are dangerous to fight, especially one-on-one, as they can disable their opponent's chakra flow, and thus prevent them from performing chakra-based Ninjutsu. The only weakness of this Dojutsu is that it has a blind spot at the neck.

As the Byakugan allows you to see the opponent's chakra path system, the Hyuga clan has created fist fighting techniques called Juken 🥊 which make it possible to block the chakra highways circulating within the body and therefore which mainly aim to limit the opponent's ability to use their chakra. The two most common techniques we see in anime are:

• Hakke Divine Whirlwind : The user releases a large amount of chakras and spins them around them quickly, forming a chakra shield 🛡️ that deflects all kinds of attacks. It is also considered the Ultimate Defense... until Gaara arrives.
• 64 Fists of the Hakke : The user unleashes a devastating 64-hit combo that deactivates precisely 64 chakra points on the opponent's body. Getting hit with a full combo not only disables chakra usage, but also renders the target harmless!

Later in Naruto Shippuden, Hinata created a new technique of her own called the Agile Twin Lion Palms. 🦁 This Ninjutsu gives the Chakra the shape of a lion's head and allows it to destroy chakra receptors as well as stun its opponents.

Tenseigan

This eye was only featured in the movie "The Last Naruto", originally owned by Hamura Otsutsuki and then inherited by his Moon descendants. 🌑

Tenseigan (転生眼), or eye of reincarnation , often recognized by its blue pupils and floral pattern. Frankly speaking, there isn't much to know about the eye, other than that it is a special Dojutsu belonging to Hamura Otsutsuki. Using the power of the eye, Hamura brought peace to his people and later his descendants consider his eyes a sacred treasure. In the film "Naruto The Last", we see Toneri Otsutsuki implant the Byakugan of Hinabi Hyuga and awaken the Tenseigan. When a member of the Ōtsutsuki clan implants the dojutsu, Byakugan of the Hyūga clan, the combination of their chakra transforms the Byakugan to Tenseigan . 🔃 He planned to use this power to bring "salvation" to humanity on Earth. Unfortunately for him, Naruto and Hinata defeated him!
Overall, it appears that the Tenseigan possesses various unique techniques capable of manipulating a kinetic technique similar to the Rinnegan as well as a gigantic golem. 🗿 As well as a strengthening power close to that of Naruto's Six Paths Sage mode.

Sharingan

Okay, this one is a pretty complicated Dojutsu since it has tons of variations and abilities . But let's try to recap, shall we?

Sharingan (写輪眼), is a unique Dojutsu that only belongs to the Uchiha clan. It has a distinct red color with a black pupil and three comma-shaped markings called tomoe. This eye is an inheritance from Kaguya, then from her grandson Indra Otsutsuki.

Honestly, all Naruto fans know this powerful Dojutsu. This eye is extremely powerful, but it is also the curse of the Uchiha clan . ☠️ The reason is this: it can only be activated by a strong emotional situation which allows the brain to release a special chakra. This chakra affects the optic nerve and completely changes the appearance of the eye. of its user. Unfortunately, in the world of Naruto, these emotional situations are often linked to loss and hatred. Not to mention the fact that the Uchiha clan is emotional and empathetic.

Of course, in exchange for the so-called "Uchiha Curse", the Sharingan grants its holder incredible power, typically:

• The Sharingan user can see the Chakra, but in a different way than the Byukagan. And most importantly, the user can clearly see the opponent's movements and even copy them (hence the name "Copy Wheel Eye"). The copy ability is not only limited to body movements, it can also perfectly copy other Ninjutsu 📜 based on different chakra types. This was the great strength of Kakashi Hatake, the copycat ninja!

The Sharingan's copy ability is formidable, but what makes it more interesting is its special Genjutsu. We know that Genjutsu can make the opponent fall into illusion. But the Sharingan Genjutsu is even more powerful because it makes the illusions appear extremely real, so real that very few opponents are able to discern a difference between reality and the illusion. The best example is probably Itachi Uchiha, the member of Akatsuki , who excels in wielding the Genjutsu techniques of the Sharingan. Most of the time, his opponents fall into the illusion before even starting the fight! 🧙

Speaking of Genjutsu, there are two powerful techniques that we've only seen one use for: Izanagi and Izanami .

Izanagi is a crazy ability that allows users to distort reality for a short time. They can transform illusion 💤 into reality and vice versa. But in exchange for such absurd power, the user will lose one of their Sharingan. During the battle between Danzo Shimura and Sasuke, Danzo escaped death numerous times thanks to Izanagi and tons of Sharingan implanted on his arm.
The second genjutsu Izanami is capable of modifying visual perceptions. When these two genjutsu combine, they are capable of trapping an opponent in an endless loop. As Itachi explained, this technique put the opponent in an eternal loop with no end. Once captured by power, the target will have no choice but to face themselves and realize their destiny . ⏳ Otherwise, the illusion will continue for eternity. When this synergy is used, the user loses their 2 sharingan, one sharingan per technique!

The Mangekyo Sharingan

This eye is the exact reason why the Sharingan is more complicated than other Dojutsu. In short, the Mangekyo Sharingan is an upgraded version of the Sharingan . He can only be awakened when users of the Sharingan witness the loss of a loved one (all the more reason why the Uchiha clan is considered "cursed"). 💀

The reason this gets complicated is that each user of the Mangekyo Sharingan has a distinct visual appearance , although all share a similar black and red color, and the shape resembles a pinwheel. Additionally, in addition to their common abilities, some users have unique abilities (which we will mention later).

In addition to the original power of the Sharingan, this enhanced version offers a whole new arsenal of powerful Ninjutsu . The most common known abilities are:

• Amaterasu : release of a black flame which is capable of consuming everything in its path and which is controlled by the user's vision. This flame can only be extinguished by its user. 🔥
• Susanoo : This is probably the "most cheated ability" in the Naruto universe, outside of Naruto's Kyubi Mode. It creates a powerful humanoid construct that surrounds the user. The development of this ability involves several stages, and in its final phase, it resembles a complete humanoid being. Each Form of Susanoo also has a unique power. Sasuke Uchiha, Itachi of Akatsuki and Madara Uchiha are the most prominent examples, especially Madara Uchiha who possesses a perfect, huge and powerful Susanoo. 👺

Besides these two common abilities, there are other unique abilities such as:

• Kamui : It opens a pocket dimension that only the user can use from the inside or outside. So far, Kakashi and Obito Uchiha are the only known Shinobi who can manipulate the Kamui. Their Kamui dimensions are also linked since both possessed each eye of the same pair.
• Tsukuyomi : This is the ultimate Sharingan Genjutsu that can alter the sense of time. 🧭 It traps the target in a powerful illusion. The pain caused in this illusion is real. (no wonder Itachi often uses Tsukuyomi as a form of torture).
• Kotoamatsukami : This Genjutsu is unique to Shisui Uchiha, it allows him to control the enemy's mind . The Kotoamatsukami can be considered the most powerful Genjutsu Sharingan to date. But as Itachi hinted, it can only be used once a decade so it can be used again.
• Meteorite Technique : During the Fourth Shinobi World War, we saw many crazy techniques. But, how about summoning a falling meteorite? 👏 This is a unique ability used by Uchiha Madara, and later by Sasuke. Not much to say about this incredible technique. However, it will almost become ridiculous when Madara becomes capable of summoning several!
• Object Manipulation : This is a new Sharingan technique presented in Boruto Naruto Next Generations. It is used by Shin Uchiha, which allows him to freely control any object sealed by himself.

The Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan

The Mangekyo Sharingan is a very powerful technique which nevertheless has a weakness, the more it is used, the more the eye becomes blurry and unusable , until it becomes blind. 👨‍🦯 However, there is a solution to this problem: if a user has another Mangekyo Sharingan transplanted from someone close to them, preferably brothers and sisters, they will obtain the eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.

The Eternal Mangakyo Sharingan retains all the power of the Mangekyo Sharingan and can be used freely , without the risk of going blind. So far, the only people who have obtained the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan are Sasuke and Madara Uchiha.

Rinnegan

Rinnegan (輪廻眼), or Eye of Samsara, is the final set of the three great dojutsu which are said to have been bestowed upon humanity only during chaotic times. Legend refers to it as the eye of God with the power to change the world . It has a distinct appearance with a purple color, as well as a small black pupil and 6 black circles around it. Each circle is said to refer to each of the six paths.🧿

The eye comes from Kaguya's Rinne Sharingan and was made by her son Hagoromo Otsutsuki. With the power of the Rinnegan, Hagoromo changed the world forever and laid the foundation for the Shinobi world. He is called the Sage of Six Paths and his Rinnegan has become part of his legend. To obtain the Rinnegan, a person must have the chakra of Harogomo in his possession or the combination of the chakra of his two sons - Indra and Asura. The first person who inherited the Rinnegan is none other than Madara - a descendant of Indra, who managed to imprint himself with the cells of Hashirama Senju - a descendant of Asura. 🧬

Sasuke is a special case because he awakened the Rinnegan by receiving half of Hagoromo's chakra. His Rinnegan also has a unique feature with 6 tomatoes on the 2 innermost circles of the eye.

As the eye representing the Six Paths, the Rinnegan possesses these six powers:

• Way of the Animals : Summoning animals.
• Way of the Asura : Arming the body with mechanical arsenal.
• Heavenly Way : Control of kinetics and gravity, including the 3 most powerful techniques: Bansho Ten'in - Force of attraction, Shinra Tensei - Force of repulsion, and Chibaku Tensei - Summoning a powerful black orb of gravity who attracts everything to himself.
• Human Way : Mind reading and soul extraction.
• Path of the Hungry Demons : Absorption Chakra
• Path of the Underworld : Summon the King of Hell who can restore a damaged body or take the souls of liars. 👿

In addition to the Six Paths abilities, there is an additional Outer Path that allows the user to resurrect the dead (Resurrect completely, not just "half" like the Impure World Reincarnation technique), transfer chakras and invoke the Chakra Chains... BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! In addition to these "standard" powers, there are several unique abilities:

• Dive into Limbo : This ability was used by Madara Uchiha to create shadows in the world of Limbo. These shadows also exist in the physical world and can act independently. They cannot be detected by any means, except for Sasuke who can see shadows using his Rinnegan. Naruto can also "feel" shadows but he cannot see them like Sasuke. 👁️
• Amenotejikara : A unique ability of Sasuke that allows him to swap positions between himself and an object (including living beings) within a certain radius.

Rinne Sharingan

Rinne Sharingan (輪廻写輪眼), is a kekkei mora but also the ancestor of the Sharingan and the Byakugan. Kaguya Ōtsutsuki is the holder of the Rinne Sharingan and uses it as her third eye. It has a distinct appearance resembling a red Sharingan with 3 circles around the pupil. Each circle also bears 3 tomoe, making 9 tomoe in total.

The eye is also called Tsuki no Me (月の眼), or eye of the moon in Japanese. According to legend, those who possess the Rinne Sharingan can reflect the moon and open the way to the infinite dream. Madara proved that this legend was true by succeeding in obtaining this eye by putting the entire world to sleep with the infinite Tsukuyomi, except for Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi and Sasuke thanks to his Susanoo.

In addition to performing the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Madara and Kaguya can both manipulate the God Tree to capture and absorb people's chakras. Another unique ability is Amenominaka , used by Kaguya to "transport" ninjas into her own dimensions, from the lava world through an ice world to a world possessing enormous gravity. As Kakashi explained, this ability requires an insane amount of chakra. In the meantime, we can see Kaguya easily transporting herself and Team 7 to different dimensions without issue, showing us just how incredibly powerful she is .

After this summary of the main Dojutsu: the Sharingan, the Byukagan , the Rinnegan as well as the Rinne Sharingan let's move on to the most recent and probably the most mysterious Dojutsu to date: the Jougan.
